Choosing a Mover
Be discriminating when choosing a mover.
Research their reliability, reputation, customer service, and request a free estimate.
Usually movers will want to come to your home and discuss the move in detail before giving an estimate.
If a mover is reluctant to give an estimate, it usually means they will tack on extra charges after the move is complete.
Ask your mover for a written (binding) estimate that lists what is being moved, to where, over what amount of time.
Packing and unpacking your belongings yourself may help reduce your moving bill.
Get movers’ insurance, and carefully consider what type of insurance you need. Generally, there are three types of insurance: basic liability covers the value of an item by weight, declared value protection covers the actual cash value of the item, and replacement value coverage will pay for a new replacement of the item.
Before and after the move, check the accuracy of all inventory sheets and the condition of your belongings.
Before the movers leave, make a list of any damaged or missing items with the on-site supervisor, and after you have both signed the list, file it with the driver.
Check with the moving company the next day to verify the driver filed the claim.
If you find any damages to your belongings after the movers are gone, file a written claim to the moving company right away. The company then has 120 days to make a decision about your claim.
