Getting a Loan Choose your lender or mortgage broker. (A broker acts as a go-between for the lender and borrower) Ask friends and relatives for referrals, and if you take their advice, be sure the mention that they sent you. You will need pay stubs from at least the last month, bank statements from the last three months, and possibly tax returns, and references. Keep up with the latest interest rate news, and if rates are low, ask your lender to commit to the rate by locking in. Be sure the lock in period includes the day you will close on the house and that you won’t have to pay any extra fees. Ask your lender if there are any special programs or loans you qualify for, and if those loans would be beneficial to you.
