Don't Forget the Big Picture

The little things that count:

Where the house is located on the block will have an effect on how well it suits your needs.

Corner lots are usually bigger, but also noisier due to the increased traffic, whereas interior lots are normally quieter but closer to the neighbors.

Look at where the house is positioned on its lot and check that the grade around it will provide proper drainage.

Some structural and landscaping features such as balconies or a lush lawn may increase the value of the property.

Real estate is all about location, location, location. That means the neighborhood matters, and it matters a lot.

Don’t forget to check out the surrounding area, the condition of the neighbors houses, the community features, how close are the schools, hospitals, public transportation, restaurants, shopping, etc.

Find out how long the house has been on the market. A long time probably means there is some problem with the house you may not be aware of.

Find out why the seller wants to sell, and make sure their reasons don’t bother you.

If resale is possible, remember to consider what most people want in a home. Resale is harder with the biggest house on the block, nothing too unusual or small, but a nice view is always a bonus.
